Annual ‘Draws for Paws’ fundraiser returns Saturday
Draws for Paws, the annual Animal Rescue League of Marshalltown fundraiser, returns this Saturday.
Now in its fourth year, the event will bring donors to various bars to raise money for the nonprofit.
“It is a fun day and a fun way to support local businesses while raising funds,” said Coordinator Peggy Hannam. “It is also a great way to raise awareness for this great organization.”
According to Hannam, Draws for Paws has become extremely popular, with an increasing annual attendance.
“We had over 150 participants last year,” she said.
Draws for Paws begins at noon at any participating bar and ends at 6 p.m. at Wayward Social, 1101 S. Sixth St., where music by the Fabulous Trutones will be provided. The other bars along the crawl are:
• American Legion, 1301 S. Sixth St.;
• El Portal, 1716 S. Center St.;
• Legends American Grill, 2902 S. Center St.;
• Old Timer Tavern, 401 S. Center St.;
• Rumours Sports Bar & Grill, 309 S. 12th Ave. Place;
• Tannin Wine Bar, 125 E. Main St.;
• The 918, 918 N. Fourth Ave.;
• The Flying Elbow, 229 N. 13th St.;
• Vaughn’s Pub, 22 N. First Ave.
“We have found that if we keep the stops to 10, everyone can fit them all in the six-hour period,” Hannam said.
She said each business provided a donation to participate in Draws for Paws. All of the bars will offer some type of special. It may be a signature drink, a special on a pint, buckets of beer or an entrée or appetizer. The proceeds from the specials will be donated to the ARL.
Everyone running through the Draws for Paws will receive a punch card to use when patronizing one of the bars. When the card is fully punched, the participant fills out their name and phone number and drops it off at Wayward Social for a prize drawing.
“Obviously, the goal is for each participant to visit all the businesses participating,” Hannam said.
For aspiring participants, it costs $50 to enter, which comes with a gray T-shirt, or $75 to get an Ultimate Giver title and a neon red orange shirt. The punch cards and T-shirts can be picked up at Legends on Friday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. or Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon.
Hannam said there are also some “super fun” silent auction items people can bid on.
Last year was one of the most expensive years for the Animal Rescue League. She said nearly $600,000 was invested in daily operations.
“This breaks down to approximately $50,000 a month,” Hannam said. “Just $150,000 of this comes from adoption fees, our contract with the city and services like cremation and low-cost neutering and spaying. That means the remaining $450,000 must come from our donors and fundraisers. We cannot provide the essential service without our community’s generous hearts.”
