Appointment goes to council for approval Monday night

A longtime captain with the Marshalltown Police Department is set to become its next chief, according to the agenda released for the Monday, Oct. 28 city council meeting.

Chris Jones, a Spencer native and Iowa State University alumni who has been employed with the MPD since 1996, was selected for appointment by City Administrator Carol Webb after five finalist interviews were completed within the last few weeks, and it will go to the council for formal approval at Monday’s meeting. He will succeed Mike Tupper, who came to the department in 2011 after previously serving as the police chief for the city of Nevada and is currently set to retire on Jan. 31, 2025.

“He is a standout candidate, and I am thrilled that he accepted the recommendation of his appointment. He will be an excellent chief for Marshalltown,” Webb said.

Mayor Joel Greer, a fellow Spencer native, described the incoming chief as “the runaway first choice” who rose above the other finalists. Jones is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and has served as a captain in the department since 2012.

Starting at $4.38/week.
