Sylvia Esther Gilmore

Sylvia Esther Gilmore was born June 14, 1917 to parents Ralph Engle Sr. and Gertie Engle in Northwood, Iowa. She passed away January 5th, 2016, at the age of 98. She grew up in Marshall County and attended elementary school in State Center and graduated from St. Anthony in 1934. She and Harold Gilmore were united in marriage on January 8, 1936. They farmed in Marshall County until Harold’s death in 1975. Sylvia remained on the farm another 10 years lending family support in continuing the farm operations.

Upon leaving the farm, Sylvia moved to Marshalltown where she resided for about 30 years. Her last few months were spent in Conrad.

Sylvia enjoyed time with family and friends as well as gardening, reading, travel and many church activities. She was a member of First Methodist Church in Marshalltown.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Gaylord and Ralph; sisters, Ruth and Marion; daughter-in-law Pat (Tom) and husband, Harold.

She is survived by daughter, Mary Ellen Streyffeler (Larry) and sons, Tom Gilmore (Jo) and Daryl (Kathy) in addition, Dee Ann Gosda (Curt), Julie Stanbrough, Paul Cagwin, Robin Clark (Brian), Todd Gilmore (Sheryl), Brent Gilmore (Miriam), Brett Gilmore, Brant Gilmore (Lori) and Brock Gilmore, Lisa Streyffeler (Step-granddaughter). Also surviving are 23 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren.

Sylvia was very proud of her family and of being a farm wife. Her faith was at the center of her life. She will be greatly missed by family and dear friends.

Memorials may be directed to House of Compassion or Salvation Army, or Food Box, Marshalltown.

Visitation Saturday, January 9th, 10:00 AM followed by services at 11:00 AM, Zearing Christian Church, Pastor Arlen Daleske. Burial will be in the Lincoln Township Cemetery in Zearing. A luncheon at the Church will follow the committal service.
