Hildegard Maria Raab was born on November 26, 1928, in Breslau, Germany; she was the daughter of Conrad and Maria (Binger) Raab. She attended school in Breslau, and after high school she hoped to attend university studying dentistry. On December 26, 1947, Hildegard came to the United States to marry that special man John Legrand, who she met in Germany. They married at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marshalltown and then spent the rest of their lives together. Hildegard was an avid art enthusiast. She worked as an artist at Apgar Studio. She also taught math at Hoglan School, and even had students return decades later to thank her for their success. She enjoyed speaking at the Toastmasters. She belonged to the Elks Ladies Club, and the Ave Maria Study Club and the Community Arts.

Left to cherish her memory are her two sons, Mark Stephen (Meihua) Legrand, of Vienna, VA, and John David Legrand, of Marshalltown, IA. and one sister, Isolde (Jim) Deninger, of Marshalltown, IA.

In death Hildegard rejoins her husband together with her parents, Conrad and Maria and her brother, Seigfreid Raab.
