A service will be held 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 26, 2017, at Prairie View Cemetery in Gilman with Pastor Cheryl Ridenour, pastor of the Gilman United Methodist Church, officiating. The Smith Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Should friends desire, memorials may be directed to the Gilman First Responders or to the Gilman United Methodist Church and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112.

Elaine was born on December 8, 1928, at Lamont, Iowa to Richard and Julia Kapke Schoenbeck. She was raised in Lamont and graduated with the Class of 1945 from Lamont High School.

On June 2, 1951, she was united in marriage to Carroll E. Thompson in Grinnell and to this union was born five children, Craig, Mary Jo, Lynn, Annette and Douglas. The family lived in Grinnell, where Elaine worked for Tiny Acres, the Grinnell Shoe Company and the Tropicana Club. In 1964, the family moved to Gilman. Elaine worked at the McIlrath CafÈ and for DeLong’s Sportswear in Gilman retiring in the late 1980s. Elaine was known as Gilman’s “bookkeeper” and “cookie lady”. She has resided at Vila Del Sol in Marshalltown for the past few months.

She was a member of the Gilman United Methodist Church, the Gilman Senior Citizens, the Ward-Paul American Legion Auxiliary and Les Femmes of Marshalltown. She enjoyed activities with her grandchildren, water aerobics, traveling, baking and being of service to her community.

Survivors include her children, Craig Thompson of Marshalltown, Mary Jo (Patrick) Smith of Grinnell, Lynn (Dennis) Johnson of Gilman and Annette (Jerry) Angle of Gilman; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and her sister, Elise Frohn of Cedar Falls.

Elaine was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one son, Douglas; one grandson, Troy Thompson; one great grandson, Ryan Eldridge; and one brother, Russell Schoenbeck.
