Georgia Flater, 78

Georgia Flater, 78, of Marshalltown passed away on April 27, 2019 at the Iowa River Hospice Home with her family at her side.

Funeral services for Georgia will be held on Wednesday, May 1 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Tom Bower. A Visitation for Georgia will be held on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 from 5-7 p.m. Memorials in Georgia’s name should be directed to the family. Georgia Virginia Korando was born on April 14, 1941 to parents George and Virginia (Walton) Korando in St. Louis, Missouri. Georgia lived in California as a young girl and in 1949 the family returned to the Midwest, where her parents opened a bakery in Grundy Center, Iowa. She attended high school in Grundy Center and graduated in the class of 1959. She later attended college at the University of Iowa and later attended the College of Medical Technology in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She was united in marriage to her husband Jack on November 11, 1961 in Omaha, Nebraska and the two renewed their vows on October 12,1978 in Marshalltown, Iowa.

Georgia worked as the director of respiratory care and sleep studies at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center for 33 years until her retirement in 2002. A well-respected professional, Georgia was named the American Business Woman’s Association Woman of the Year for 1993-94. Georgia had a passion for helping others and was active in many service organizations including Time, Talents and Treasures (TTT) and the American Lung Association. She served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer for over 7 years and organized and hosted a support group for respiratory care patients. In 2007 Georgia received the Govenor’s Volunteer Award for Outstanding Service to the state of Iowa.

Georgia was a loving wife, mother, sister and friend with a huge heart and generous and compassionate nature. She had an inquisitive mind and an adventurous spirit and she loved to travel with family and friends. She was an avid bridge player and an enthusiastic gardener. But more than anything Georgia was well-loved by her family and huge circle of friends.

Left to cherish her memory is her loving husband Jack Flater; children Scott Flather of Des Moines, Sean (Stephanie) Flater of Rochester, Michigan, Courtenay (Vince) Bollhoefer of Laurel; grandchildren Jared Flater, Aubrey “BreAnne” Flater, Logan Bollhoefer, Hunter Bollhofer, Parker Bollhoefer, Sophie Flater, and John Flater; great- grandchildren Braxton Bollhoefer, Axel Bollhoefer, Henrik Birchmier; siblings Linda Sedlacek, Teresa Stephenson, and Barbara Korando.

In death, Georgia rejoins her parents George and Virginia Korando; sister Judith Abrahamson; and great grandson Graysen Bollhoefer.
