Alma Bessie Hass, 98

Alma Bessie Hass, 98, a resident of Westbrook Acres in Gladbrook and formerly of Marshalltown, passed away Monday, May 27, 2019, at Westbrook Acres under the care of Hospice Compassus. Funeral Services will be held Friday, May 31, 2019, at 11:00 AM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama. Interment will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery in Gladbrook. Visitation will be held Friday, May 31, 2019, from 10 AM until the time of service at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home.

Alma was born on May 16, 1921, in Clutier, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph Kousicka and Bessie Dalecka.

She attended Duponda School in rural Toledo.

On January 25, 1944, she was united in marriage to Leslie Henry Hass in Marshalltown.

Alma farmed with her husband for twenty years near Gladbrook. She was employed at Dick’s Restaurant in Toledo for three years and retired and moved to Marshalltown in 1967. Alma was a blue ribbon homemaker. She took pride in her appearance and her family’s. She was very particular and wanted things done a certain way. Alma was a very talented baker, especially kolaches and rolickys. She had a green thumb and could make anything grow. Later in life, Alma took up painting and was a very talented artist.

Survivors include five children: Clara Peter, of Jamestown, CA, Alan (Ruby) Hass, of Mount Holly Springs, PA, Mary (the late Robert) LaMothe, of Huntley, IL, Sandy (Kenny) Coppick, of Van Meter, IA and Deb (Ambrose) Lang, of Marshalltown; thirteen grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Leslie Hass on July 26, 1996; one son, Stephen C. Hass who was killed in Vietnam in 1967; one sister, Irene Crouch and two brothers, Frank Riha and Adolph Riha.
