Esther Djuren Hougham, 97

Esther Djuren Hougham, 97, of Marshalltown, passed away on Monday, June 10, 2019, at Glenwood Place in Marshalltown.

Funeral services for Esther will be on Tuesday, June 18, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Esther Djuren was born on May 2, 1922, on a farm northeast of Clear Lake, Iowa to Siebend and Minnie Cremer Djuren. The family lived on the farm across from the country school she attended through eighth grade. Esther went to Clear Lake High School her freshman year then graduated from high school in Mason City in 1940. Esther married Raymond “Ray” Hougham on April 5, 1942, on the family farm with her father-in-law, Zerry Hougham officiating the ceremony.

Esther was a mother and homemaker while being fully employed as well. She had two daughters, Jacque and Vicki. Esther kept very busy with their activities and working full time. She was a bookkeeper for Ray’s Supply, the business she and Ray owned in Baxter. After that closed, she was secretary to the Superintendent as well as on the Board at Baxter Community School and was the town treasurer. Esther and Ray moved to Des Moines in 1965 where she worked for Gendler Stone Products Company for fourteen years. Esther moved to the Embers in Marshalltown in 2009 and recently to Glenwood in 2018. She was a member of the First Congregational Church. Esther had always enjoyed playing board games and cards. She was an avid reader and enjoyed walking for exercise.

Those left to cherish her loving memories are her two daughters: Jacquelyn Street, of Whittier, California and Vicki (Gary) McKibbin, of Marshalltown; her five grandchildren: Angie (Rob) Petrie, Troy (Kate) Miller, Mandi (Scott) Ogle, Alicia (Brent) Fischer and Jeff (April) McKibbin; eleven grandsons: Rob Petrie, Kale, Garrett and Boston McKibbin, Zach Fischer, Calvin Ogle and Joshua, Jacob, Gavin, Cole and Logan Miller and six step great grandchildren: Trinity, Justice, Kendall and Kaynen See and Ronan and Callon Ham. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Betty Djuren and brother-in-law, George Taylor.

Esther was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two brothers, Harm and Elbert Djuren and five sisters: Marie Varvel, Irene Stoltenberg, Helen Calvert, Edna Hauer and her twin sister, Mae Mitcham.
