Margaret (Peg) Day

Margaret (Peg) Day died on Monday, June 24, 2019, under the care of Iowa River Hospice in Marshalltown.

Per Peg’s wishes cremation rites have been accorded. Memorials in Peg’s name may be directed to her family for a later designation. Peg was born on August 22, 1931, in Walker, IA, the second of five children born to Phillip Leslie and Mary Neal Jones. She grew up in Williamsburg and Iowa City, IA, graduating from St. Patrick’s High School.

On July 7, 1951, Peg married Robert Nissen. While their marriage later ended in divorce, five children were born to the couple: Kathleen (Kathy), Melinda (Mim), Matthew (Matt), Jennifer and Mary. On April 22, 1989, Peg was married to Homer Day. They spent most of their married years and retirement living on Union Grove Lake near Garwin, IA.

Peg’s careers in Marshalltown were spent primarily within non-profit organizations. She worked at both Mid-Iowa Community Action (MICA) and Substance Abuse Treatment Unit of Central Iowa (SATUCI) during the 1980’s. Peg made many friends and touched numerous lives over her years with those agencies.

There are so many stories that could be told about Peg and her life, but space is limited. Her friends and family will live with their memories of this amazing woman.

Peg is survived by her children: Kathy (Jim) Wuerffel, Lakefield, MN, Mim (Kevin) Duffy, Newton, IA, Matt Nissen, Marshalltown, Mary Riley, Mt. Pleasant, IA; grandchildren: Casey Howell, Emily (Jon) Stammer, Mike (Amy) Duffy, Jon (Allie) Nissen, Jeff Nissen, Matt (Liz) Sagar, John Sagar, Devin (Hilary) Riley, Daniel (Amanda) Jamell, Michael Tim Bruns; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Cari Malone, of Iowa City, IA, and many other relatives and close friends.

Preceding Peg in death were her parents, her husband, Homer Day; daughter, Jennifer Sagar; grandson, Patrick Duffy and three siblings.

A Memorial Reception for Peg will be held in Marshalltown at a future date under the direction of her family. A private family graveside service will be held at the Union Grove Cemetery near Gladbrook.
