Norma J. Sass, 92, of Gladbrook, IA, passed away Monday, July 1, 2019, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center, IA. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 6, 2019, at the Peace United Church of Christ in Gladbrook. Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, July 5, 2019, at the church. Inurnment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Peace United Church of Christ or Cedar Valley Hospice. Norma was born January 17, 1927, to Clarence and Lillian (Nissen) Ehlers. She was one of seven children raised on the farm near Dinsdale, IA. Norma graduated from Dinsdale High School with the Class of 1944. She was united in marriage to John Sass, Sr. of Lincoln, IA, on December 19, 1945. Norma was employed as bookkeeper for Schade Lime & Rock, starting in 1963, for 35 plus years. She worked in the fields for many summers and falls detasseling and sorting corn. Norma was a member of the Peace United Church of Christ where she was a Sunday School teacher and active in the Guild. She was also a member of the Amvets and a Cub Scout leader. Norma loved following her family in sports and attended many activities. She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. Norma enjoyed playing cards, 500, Pepper, Crazy 8, Cribbage, reading and especially loved family get-togethers where she would catch up on all their activities.
Norma is survived by her children: Jack (Jane) Sass, Linda (Bill) Schneider, Barb Marchant, all of Gladbrook; seven grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren, a sister, Beverly Becker, of Gilbertville, IA, a sister-in-law, Evelyn Ehlers, of Cedar Falls, IA.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John in 2001, two grandsons; John Marchant in 2002, Eric Pierce in 2008, four brothers and one sister.
