Charles Berthold Hanson, 84

Charles Berthold Hanson, 84, of Bellingham, WA, died at 10:10 PM Friday, August 16, 2019, at Peace Health St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bellingham, Washington.

Born April 10, 1935, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, he was the son of Albert Hanson and Emily Halfpap Hanson. He married Norma Cavell on October 6, 1962, in Laurel, IA. He graduated from Fort Dodge High School in 1953 and attended Fort Dodge Junior College for two years. He then attended Iowa State University, graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1957. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving from 1957 to 1960. Chuck worked as a mechanical engineer for the Parsons Company in Newton, IA for 14 years and the J I Case company in Burlington, IA for 23 years along with 6 years as a Consultant Engineer. Through his career he designed construction equipment including backhoes and skid steer loaders. He had 12 patents related to this work.

Chuck was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Burlington, Iowa. He and Norma joined in 1975 and in the ensuing years, he served 9 years as a Deacon and 6 years as a Ruling Elder. He was also an active member of a men’s weekly Bible study for many years.

He was a member of the local Toastmasters group and was very interested in working on the genealogy of his family. He enjoyed time with his grandchildren watching and hearing about their sports/school activities and sharing stories. He was a talented gardener and raised delicious green beans, potatoes, tomatoes, asparagus, onions, rhubarb and squash. He also enjoyed reading, trips to the library, sharing about history, learning new skills such as public speaking, oil painting through an enjoyable course at SCC, walking at the high school track and later enjoyed exercise with the local Parkinson’s Support Group which he spoke of often. He was a big fan of the Iowa State Cyclones, Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs.

Survivors include his wife, one daughter, Mary (Greg) Adler, of Ferndale, WA and one son, Mark (Lijuan) Hanson, of Bellevue, WA; and three grandchildren: Curtis Adler, Keira Hanson and Lia Hanson.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 until 4:00 p.m. Friday, August 30, 2019, at Lunning Funeral Chapel, 2620 Mt. Pleasant St., Burlington, IA. The memorial service for Mr. Hanson will be at 4:00 pm Friday, August 30, 2019 at Lunning Funeral Chapel with Reverend Deb Kinney officiating. Burial will be at the Laurel Methodist Cemetery in Laurel, IA.

Memorials have been established for the Southeast Iowa Parkinson’s Support Group, Burlington, Iowa and First Presbyterian Church, Burlington, Iowa.
