Delores R. Matney, 92

Delores R. Matney, 92, of Gladbrook, passed away on Sunday, November 10, 2019, at Westbrook Acres Nursing Home in Gladbrook.

Memorial services for Delores will be held on Friday, November 15, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at Gladbrook United Methodist Church. Visitation will take place prior to the service time, starting at 10:00 a.m. Memorials may be directed to the family. Delores Arp was born in Marshalltown on January 31, 1927, to Minnie (Wrage) and Rueben Arp. She grew up in Gladbrook and graduated from high school in 1945. Delores attended business school in Marshalltown and worked at Herman’s Dress Shop. On July 20, 1945, she married Charles Matney in Waynesville, Missouri. They lived in Marshalltown until 1948 when they moved to Gilman. In 1990, they returned to Gladbrook. Delores was a member of Gilman Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School, was the President of the United Methodist Women, a member of the Today and Tomorrow Women’s Club and she founded the Gilman Friends Library. “Delores Avenue” in Gilman is named in her honor. Delores was employed by Joen’s Hardware in Gilman and worked for Miracle Playground Equipment Co. in Grinnell for 6 years. In Gladbrook, Delores was an active member of the Methodist Church and was secretary of the United Methodist Women for eight years. She was also an active member and past President of the Alpha Study Club. Delores did a lot of traveling and visited every state in the Union except Hawaii and Rhode Island. She also traveled to England and Turkey, with stops in France and Italy.

Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Jerri (Steve) Baumeier; granddaughter, Jennifer (Brian) Fuhs; granddaughters-in-law, Theresa Juhl (David Ryan) and Jill Collins (William Baumeier); thirteen great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

Delores is preceded in death by her parents, Rueben and Minnie Arp; husband, Chuck Matney; long time special friend, Doyle Weaver; grandsons, David Ryan and William Baumeier; and her brothers, Paul and David Arp.

Delores greeted everyone with a warm hug; please pay it forward and carry on her wonderful legacy.
