Virgil Henry Knoll, 84

Virgil Henry Knoll, 84, of Melrose, passed away on Saturday, November 9, 2019, at his home in Melrose, IA.

Virgil was born on July 19, 1935, in Marshalltown, IA, the son of William C. and Verena J. (Vanderah) Knoll. He attended St. Joseph’s Elementary School in Haverhill, IA, and later attended high school at St. Mary’s High School in Marshalltown, IA. Virgil served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War.

Upon returning home from the military, Virgil worked at Borden Dairy and Fisher Controls before working for the Marshall County Department of Transportation as a road maintainer and grader for many years.

Virgil was very devout in his Catholic faith, was very social, enjoyed visiting with others and never knew a stranger. He loved his family, especially his nieces and nephews. He enjoyed being outdoors in his younger years, golfing and playing baseball and enjoyed bowling. He enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins, playing pool and loved animals, especially his dog and cat.

Virgil is survived by a sister, Chris (Joe) Hayes; 3 nephews: Jason (Monica) Hayes, Andrew (Allison) Hayes, Kyle (Chelsie) Hayes and a niece, Lesa (Craig) Kehoe and their families. Virgil is also survived by several other relatives from both the Knoll and Vanderah families, as well as many good friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Verena and a brother in infancy, Steven Knoll.

A private burial will take place at a later date.
