Ellen Elizabeth Hazen

Ellen Elizabeth Hazen of Glenwood Place passed away on Thursday, January 9, 2020 at the Iowa River Hospice Home with her family at her side.

Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Francis of Assisi Parish: Saint Mary Catholic Church with Father Michael McAndrew officiating. Born Ellen Elizabeth Tough on July 17, 1929 in Bellingham, Minnesota to LeRoy and Shirley Arnold Tough, she was the oldest of ten children. She received her education graduating from Albion High School in 1948. She then went to Central Iowa Business College in Marshalltown, graduating with a secretarial and accounting degree. On September 17, 1961, Ellen was united in marriage to Fred J. Hazen at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Ellen had worked at a great many jobs she had taught at Central Iowa Business College, Central Abstract Company for Ed Adams and was Deputy County Recorder at the courthouse. Ellen was a devout Catholic and a member of the Franciscans, Daughters of the American Revolution and AMVETS and held offices in many organizations. She enjoyed traveling and had been to Rome, Alaska, Scotland and London just to name a few places and also enjoyed following her ancestry and always thinking of others before herself.

Left to cherish her memory is her three sisters: Margaret Kroener, Rosemary Tough and Ruth Dawson; sister in law Joan Tough and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Fred; brothers: Jim and Robert; sisters: Alice, Janice, Carolyn and Barbara and nephews Jim Springer and Kevin Kroener
