Ricky Lee Matney was born on September 22, 1961, to parents Richard and Ruth (Rowen) Matney at Eldora Memorial Hospital. He grew up attending various schools throughout Iowa including Finchford, Urbandale and Marshalltown, which he graduated from in 1980. Rick honorably served his country by joining the Marine Corps in 1980. He was stationed in Millington, Tennessee and Kaneohe, Hawaii. He also traveled on naval ships, visiting bases in Singapore, Tokyo, Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines. Rick was honorably discharged in 1984.

Rick later met his wife Christine “Chris” (Drummer) Matney and they were united in marriage on September 26, 1992, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marshalltown. Rick and Chris raised three beautiful daughters and celebrated 32 wonderful years together.

Rick worked as an insurance salesman for Farm Bureau and later McRill-Stowell-Christensen where he was widely beloved by coworkers and clients.

In his free time, Rick enjoyed playing golf at the American Legion, traveling with his family (especially his trips to Arizona with Chris), and going to The Spot to grab a drink and playing darts with many friends. Rick was also the former president and board member of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program for 20+ years where he mentored many children including Brayden and Autumn Peterson. Rick, Chris and their daughters were active members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church where Chris served as a catechist and Rick served as a catechist aide and also the “snack guy.” Rick also enjoyed watching Iowa State football and tailgating at games. He was also a fan of trivia games and loved to watch Jeopardy. He loved music, especially listening to Elton John with his daughters.

Rick was a proud father and husband and was always involved in his daughter’s extracurricular activities both in high school and college.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife Chris Matney (Drummer); children: Kaelee Marie Matney, Kellie Ruth Matney and Kathreen “Katie” Colleen Matney (Dawson Peters); his mother Ruth Matney; his sister Lori Matney; his brothers-in-law Randy (Diana) Drummer, Kevin (Michelle) Drummer and Jeff (Amy) Drummer; his great nephew Logan Thompson and many nieces, nephews, extended relatives and close friends.

In death, Rick rejoins his father Richard; his father-in-law Donald Drummer; mother-in-law Karen Weiny and her husband John Weiny. He is also rejoined by his faithful dog Eugene and several close friends.

Rick’s family would like to extend a special thank you to Iowa River Hospice and the Bliss Cancer Center for the excellent care they provided to Rick and his family.
