Robert “Bob” Zahnd, 84

Robert “Bob” Zahnd, 84, of Melbourne, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 28, 2020, in his home under the care of Iowa River Hospice.

Funeral services for Bob will take place Friday, December 4 at 10:30 A.M. at Mitchell Family Funeral Home, with Pastor Emily Blue officiating. Following the service, Bob will be laid to rest at Melbourne Memorial Garden, with military honors provided by the combined VFW/American Legion Honor Guard of the surrounded area. A visitation will be held Thursday, December 3 at 5:00-7:00 P.M. at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Attendees are required to wear masks and follow state guidelines for social gatherings. Robert Charles Zahnd was born on December 13, 1935, in St. Anthony to parents Chris and Martha (Luthi) Zahnd. After graduating from Melbourne High School in 1953, he honorably served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was a lifelong resident of Melbourne outside of his time in the service. Bob worked as a machinist for Emerson-Fisher Controls for 30 years before retiring. He was a member of St. John United Church of Christ in Melbourne and the Marshalltown UAW. Bob coached baseball for many years and loved to travel, especially enjoying his trip to Switzerland, where his father was from. He loved spending time with his grandkids and attending their sporting events. In his free time, Bob enjoyed yard work and gardening.

Left to cherish his memory is his children: Debra Zahnd-Creason, of Waterloo, Charles Zahnd, of Madison, WI, Kenneth (Penny) Zahnd, of Marshalltown and Donald Zahnd, of State Center; grandchildren: Kevin Zahnd, Brandi (Ethan) Creason-Azbill, Robert E. (Lori) Zahnd, Christian Zahnd, Amanda Zahnd, Shelby Zahnd, Chelsy Zahnd, Emma Zahnd, Megan (Haley) Zahnd, Savannah Zahnd, Josliyn Zahnd and Lilian Zahnd; 24 great grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren and his siblings: Richard (Marilee) Zahnd, of Moravia and Darlene Buck, of Fort Dodge.

In death, Bob is reunited with his parents: Chris and Martha Zahnd; siblings: Margaret Gelhaus, Doris Pfantz and John Zahnd; grandson, Daniel Zahnd and great grandson, Ethan Zahnd.
