Doris Eike, 86

Doris Eike, age 86, passed away peacefully at the Israel Hospice House in Ames, Iowa on Tuesday, February 23, 2021. Doris was an energetic soul who loved life and is now reunited in eternity with her husband, Wendell, of 61 years.

Doris June (Dillon) Eike was born April 12, 1934, to Emory and Mae Dillon, in Moorcroft, Wyoming; the youngest of four brothers and three sisters. She was baptized in the Community of Christ Church. Doris was raised on the family ranch sixty miles from Gillette, Wyoming. She loved the ranch life where she developed a love for the outdoors, as she explored the land on her horse. One of her proudest accomplishments was earning her own horse through summers of sheep herding.

At age 14, the family moved to Odessa, Missouri. Doris graduated from Odessa High School and obtained her Associate’s Degree from Graceland College in 1954. Doris continued her education completing her Bachelor’s Degree from Drake University in 1968.

Upon graduation from Graceland, Doris took a teaching position in Pleasantville, Iowa, where she met her future husband, Wendell Eike. They were united in marriage on June 23, 1957, in Odessa, Missouri. In 1957, Wendell and Doris moved to Reinbeck, Iowa, where they started their family. In 1964, the family moved to Radcliffe, Iowa where Doris taught third grade at Radcliffe Community School from 1967 to 1981.

In 1981 Doris and Wendell purchased the Chalet, a ladies’ clothing boutique, in Marshalltown, Iowa. Her upbeat personality kept customers coming in for the latest fashions, with Wendell working behind the scenes. Doris was a true “fashionista.” In 2004, Doris entered semi-retirement and her daughter Wendy purchased the Chalet. Doris continued to work a couple days a week at the Chalet, while also working part-time at the Radcliffe Friendly Fairways from 2005 to 2016.

Doris was a valued member of her community, participating in activities and organizations in Radcliffe and Marshalltown. When Doris wasn’t working; she and Wendell were attending sporting events of her kids and grandkids, traveling, visiting Shelly and Bill in Texas, golfing, baking bread, tending to her gardens and feeding the birds. Doris’ life was enriched by her many friends, family and grandchildren.

Doris is survived by daughters; Shelly (Bill) Cox of Fort Worth, Texas, Wendy (Marty) Frangenberg of Ankeny, Iowa, grandchildren Zachery Frangenberg of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Megan Frangenberg of West Des Moines, Iowa; her brother Harold of Missouri and sister Lois of Texas. Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Wendell in 2018; her parents and siblings, Keith, Thelma, Hubert, Verne and Dorothy.

A small service for friends and family to celebrate Doris’s life will be held at the Boeke Funeral Home in Radcliffe, April 10 at 1:00 pm and visitation from 2-3:30 pm. Masks are optional. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established at the Radcliffe Security State Bank for the Radcliffe Public Library. Checks may be made out to the Doris Eike Memorial.
