Dennis Lee Mack, 73

Dennis Lee Mack, 73, passed away Friday, July 2, 2021, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa. Dennis was born April 18, 1948, to Paul and Mary (Shay) Mack in Burlington, IA. He graduated from Burlington High school in 1966 and attained his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of North Florida. Dennis enlisted in the United States Navy in 1971 and was honorably discharged six years later in 1977. Dennis was united in marriage to Mary Minor in Burlington, IA on May 5, 1973.

Dennis and Mary settled in Marshalltown, IA in 1978 where they welcomed three children: Andrew, Justin and Sarah. He worked in labor relations for the Iowa Department of Personnel for most of his career. He ended his long career in public service as Director of Personnel and then Acting Commandant at the Iowa Veterans Home before retiring in 2010.

Dennis was an avid woodworker later in life; he remodeled almost every room in their home. He and Mary also enjoyed traveling, specifically to the Pacific Northwest, Maine and the North Shore. Dennis was a past member of the Marshalltown Kiwanis Club and was a history buff, especially reading about the Civil War. He was also a lifelong tennis player.

Dennis is survived by his mother, Mary Mack of Burlington, IA; Wife, Mary Mack of Marshalltown, IA; three children: Andrew Mack of Seattle, WA, Justin (Rejean) Mack of Ankeny, IA and Sarah (Nick) Sheppard of Clive, IA; his honorary daughter, Nadia Tinoco; grandchildren: Natalie and Izzy Mack and Jacob and Isaac Sheppard; siblings: Tim Mack, Doug Mack and Paula (Steve) Stoller along with many extended family members.

He is preceded in death by his father, Paul Mack.

Per Dennis’ wishes, cremation rights have been accorded and there will be no public services at this time. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
