In this week’s column I would like to reflect back at this year’s session of the Senate. As a first-year senator, I can say it has been busy. In the discussions I have had with other senior senators, I have learned this year has been somewhat historic.

I have had the opportunity to run a fair amount of bills on the floor. The first bill I floor managed this session was to codify the procedures in which state institutions are to fly the MIA/POW flag. Another bill I floor managed created intent of theft on equipment rental. This bill will help protect the rental businesses in our district and our state.

Over the last few months, I have listened to many people from our district. I have tried to respond to nearly every email or call I received. It has always been a priority for me to show accountability for my decisions and I have tried to do just that.

This session has been exceptionally tough. Over time taxpayer money has slipped into so many areas of everyday life. We as a society have become overly reliant on funding that is not sustainable. In order to maintain an acceptable level of essential government services, hard choices had to be made.

It has been an honor to serve the people of District 36. I have enjoyed meeting and listening to so many people. It will be a welcome change to spend more time with my family. I would like to thank my family for accepting the sacrifice that has come with holding a public office.

In closing I must add one more point. I have witnessed firsthand the polarization of people due to politics. The underlying factor to this problem appears to be derived from the dissemination of information. It is our obligation as voting citizens to become informed. Inform yourselves with facts, not feelings. Facts can be proven in a substantive and civil manner.
