Maxine was born on September 20, 1922, in Tingley, IA, to George W. and Mary Katherine (Thompson) McNutt. After graduating from Maloy High School in 1940, she moved to Marshalltown and attended Central Iowa Business College, graduating in 1942. She was employed as a bookkeeper at McGregor Furniture Company from 1942-1946, and as a medical secretary and receptionist for Drs. Grossman, Reading, Mandsager, Foley and Kosinski from 1958-1989. Maxine married John William Croker on June 17, 1946, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Marshalltown. They had three children, John William, Jr., Michael Patrick, and Margaret Anne.

Following the death of her beloved husband, John, in 1979, she shared her indomitable spirit and joy with her family and her kind and beautiful manner with all those who met her. The holiday gatherings she designed, her baking, her love of pop culture and her sense of humor delighted her children and grandchildren. Her attendance at the sporting events and music and theater productions of her grandchildren was a constant. She was known as “Grandma” by many.

Left to honor and cherish Maxine’s memory are her children: Michael (Mary Lou) Croker, Marshalltown; Margaret (Douglas) Gervich, Marshalltown; six grandchildren: Colleen (Aaron) Kelly, Katie (Jamie) Schaefer, Samantha (Nate) Kaeding, Molly (Kendall) Dammeier, John and Aaron Gervich; seven great-grandchildren: Ryan, Sean, and Logan Kelly; Jack, Wyatt, Tess and Harper Maxine Kaeding, and her sisters-in-law Dolores Croker, Ames, IA, and Ann McNutt, Marshalltown.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John, her son John William, Jr., her sister, Mable Rhoads, and her brother, Dean McNutt.
