Stop signs scream ‘little hick cow town’

I grew up in Marshalltown in the 40s and 50s and graduated from the old high school on 11th street in 1960. I loved Marshalltown and all the schools I attended, the teachers, and especially my classmates, but one thing has me puzzled.

When I was in high school the mood of the town seemed to be that we wanted to be considered a city, not a little hick cow town. But I can’t think of anything that screams little hick cow town more than removing the traffic signals and replacing them with stop signs. What was the city council and city administrator thinking? Are we saving a couple bucks in electricity?
