Preserve the Fisher family legacy

In a recent Letter to the Editor, Harvey Varnum spoke of the Fisher family and what they had done for the Marshalltown community. We agree with his sentiments. I didn’t know Bill Fisher well, but I knew Martha-Ellen and Emily from dealing with them in my business and activities in the community.

Both women were wonderful people, very down to earth, kind and humble. The Fisher family was very generous to Marshalltown. Not everything they did had their name on it; that wasn’t important to them.

I read recently about changing the name of the Fisher Community Center and Martha-Ellen Tye Theater. They had contacted a Fisher family member, and that person did not object to the name change. That doesn’t surprise me; it follows along with the humility of the family.

I feel it should remain named for the Fishers. It might even encourage other family businesses that have been successful in Marshalltown to be philanthropic also. Hopefully, more people will express their appreciation for the Fisher family and want to maintain the legacy. If not, future generations won’t even remember the family and all they have done for the community.
