Giraffes, monkeys favorite at zoo

June 3, 2014 - Bennet Goldstein
We decided to head to the Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines earlier this week and it had its ups and downs. On the good side, we got there early before the big school groups arrived so we had the place to ourselves practically. On the bad side, the zoo train was busted that morning so we couldn’t ride it. For my kids the favorite animal was undoubtedly the giraffes. Anytime you can get that close to those long-necked animals it’s pretty cool. The monkeys were a hit too as one jumped on the fence right in our direction as if to say “look at me.” It drew a few laughs from my kids. Other monkeys were doing some questionable things in the exhibit which I won’t put in print — since this is a family-friendly blog. The kids also liked the prairie dog exhibit where they could poke their heads out of the middle of the exhibit. Compared to zoos in bigger cities, the Blank Park Zoo is relatively small, and if you have an impatient 2-year-old, you can breeze through the entire zoo in just more than an hour. Since we had more time left, it led us to ask the kids: “What animal do you want to see again?”
