BIG FOUR WOMEN'S HOOPS: Hawkeyes handed narrow setback by Michigan, 68-64

IOWA CITY - Rachel Sheffer scored a career-high 26 points and the Michigan women's basketball team won its eighth straight, a 68-64 victory over Iowa on Sunday in Big Ten Conference play.

The Wolverines shot 50 percent from the field (24-for-48), 10-of-22 from 30-point range and held the host Hawkeyes to 37 percent field-goal shooting (23-for-62).

Kate Thompson added 19 points with five 3-pointers, and Sheffer made four treys for Michigan (13-2, 2-0). The Wolverines are off to the best start in program history.

Iowa used a 15-4 run late in the game to get within 64-62 with 1:01 left, but Michigan made just enough free throws to keep the lead.

Samantha Logic's layup with 16 secnods left got Iowa within 67-64, but Jenny Ryan made one of two free throws to seal it.

Melissa Dixon made five 3-pointers to pace the Hawkeyes (12-4, 1-1) with 17 points off the bench. Logic finished with 16 points and team-highs of nine rebounds, nine assists and three steals.

Theairra Taylor tallied 14 points and Morgan Johnson was held to 10.

Iowa is back in action Thursday at Wisconsin.

Northern Iowa 54, Indiana St. 52

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Jacqui Kalin scored a game-high 21 points and Hannah Schonhardt added 11 as the Northern Iowa women topped Indiana State for their first Missouri Valley Conference victory of the season.

UNI (6-8, 1-1) led by as many as 10 points late in the first half, but the lead changed hands 13 times before this one was done. Indiana State (9-4, 1-1) went up by three midway through the second half.

Taylor Whitley led the Sycamores with 12 points, and Racheal Mahan had 11 points and 12 boards.
