Irene Weir, 86, of the Villa del Sol in Marshalltown, former longtime Laurel resident, died early Saturday morning, January 19th, 2013 at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 26th, at the Laurel United Methodist Church with Pastor Marvin Siems officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Graceland Cemetery at Laurel. Visitation will be held one-hour prior to the services at the church. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. Born Emily Irene Weir on July 18, 1926, at the Deaconess Hospital in Marshalltown, she was the daughter of Samuel and Tena (Deshong) Weir. She graduated from the Gilman High School in 1944 and the Mercy School of Nursing in 1947. She began a lifetime of assisting those in need by being a nurse at Mercy Hospital in Marshalltown from graduation until 1949, then Grinnell Hospital from 1950 to 1952 and DeWitt Community Hospital from 1952-53 before going to Mercy Hospital in Oelwein from 1953 to 1964. She returned to her home area to nurse at Skiff Hospital in Newton from 1964 until retiring in 1990. Irene was a member of the Laurel United Methodist Church and the Laurel United Methodist Women.
Left to cherish her memory is her niece Sandra Edelbrock, nephews Douglas and Keith Weir, great nieces and nephews: Cheryl Anderson, Kai Anderson, Scott Holmes, Alicia Purdy, Kellen Edelbrock, Conner Edelbrock, Bradley Weir, Christina Pansegrau and Amy Weir.
In death, she rejoined her parents, her sister and brother-in-law Kathleen and Warren "Pinky" Maytag, her brother, and nieces Kathleen Maytag, Kathe Maytag Anderson on June 26, 2006, and Eileen Maytag Holmes on January 7, 2000 as well as Timothy Weir.
