Mason City man faces local forgery charges

A Mason City man made his initial appearance Thursday on a forgery charge after Cerro Gordo police picked him up on a warrant Wednesday.

William Odell, 41, was wanted for allegedly using the credit card of an associate's mother to purchase more than $1,000 in goods and services in mid-April, said Marshall County Chief Deputy Burt Tecklenburg.

Deputies already arrested Odell's alleged accomplice, Kendra Walker, 36, formerly of Albion, May 30, Tecklenburg said. Police began the investigation May 15, discovering the two had used a credit card belonging to Walker's mother to purchase various items, including gas and a motel room, in a four-day spending spree.

Both Walker and Odell are charged with forgery, a Class D felony.

Odell's preliminary hearing is set for June 24.

Salud Castillo, 316 N. 11th Ave., made an initial appearance on a theft-fifth degree charge, a violation of pre-trial release charge and a failure to properly register as a sex offender charge. On the theft-fifth degree charge he pleaded guilty and was fined $65 with a $22.75 surcharge, a $125 law enforcement initiative surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $272.75 plus restitution if applicable. The court allowed for monthly installment payments of $50 beginning July 3 until the debt is paid. On the other two charges the public defender's office which was previously appointed will continue representation on these cases. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. June 14. Bond is set at $4,000 total, cash or surety.

Remedios Cruz Baldus, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a operating while intoxicated charge and a improper tail light charge. The public defender's office was appointed to handle her cases. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. June 24. Cruz Baldus was released on her own recognizance. The court ordered that she obtain a substance abuse evaluation and submit the results to the court within 60 days of today's date.

Anthony James Shearer, 501 S. Second St., made an initial appearance on a violation of a no-contact order charge. The original no-contact order came from Polk County and as a result the court ordered that Shearer make an initial appearance in Polk County court at 9 a.m. or the time set for initial appearances in Polk County on Friday.

Jay Sundvold, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a arrest warrant charging him with failure to appear for a plea proceeding. Marshon Dubbert will continue representation. The plea hearing is rescheduled for 2:30 p.m. June 12. Bond is set at $1,000 cash only.

Paul Hopkins, 924 N. Fifth Ave., made an initial appearance on a serious assault charge and a driving while barred charge. The public defender's office was appointed to handle his cases. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. June 14. Bond is set at $3,000 cash or surety total for both charges. A no-contact order was issued for the protected party.

Maria Mendoza, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a no valid driver's license charge and a passing a school bus violation. She pleaded guilty to both charges. On the no valid driver's license charge the fine was $200 with a $70 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $330, due within 30 days of today's date. The fine on the school bus violation charge was $65 with a $22.75 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $147.75, due within 30 days of today's date.

Marshall Freeman Hooper, 211 S. Fourth St. Apt. #1, made an initial appearance on a possession of a Schedule I controlled substance charge. The public defender's office was appointed to handle his case. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. June 21. Hooper was released on his own recognizance.

Michael James Grandstaff, 705 Union St., made an initial appearance on a driving while revoked charge. The public defender's office was appointed to handle his case. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. June 12. Bond is set at $1,000.

Eric Lee Riskedahl, 303 S. Fourth St. Apt. #4, made an initial appearance on a warrant charging him with being absence from custody. The public defender's office was appointed to handle his case. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. June 12. Bond is set at $5,000 cash.

Carlos Dominges, 708 N. Fifth Ave., made an initial appearance on a driving under suspension charge, a no valid driver's license charge, a failure to signal charge and a no insurance charge. The public defender's office was appointed to handle his cases. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. June 10. Bond is set at $1,000 cash or surety.

Tiffany L. Harris, 509 E. Olive St. Apt. #6, made an initial appearance on a disorderly conduct charge. She pleaded not guilty and a pre-trial conference is set for 9 a.m. July 23 in Magistrate Court.

Joseph Harmon, 116 N. Center St., made an initial appearance on a disorderly conduct charge. He pleaded guilty and was fined $65 with a $22.75 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $147.75, due within 30 days of today's date.

Larry Robert Prusha, 910 N. Fifth Ave., made an initial appearance on a trespass charge. He pleaded guilty and was fined $100 with a $160 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $320, due within 30 days of today's date.
