Plans have been approved for the next big construction project in the Marshalltown Community School District.

The expected $3 million project to remodel two floors of the former Anson Middle School to house school district administration offices is expected this fall.

The school board received details on the plan at a meeting this week and is moving forward with the bid process occurring in September. Bids are expected to be awarded by the school board Sept. 23 with construction to begin following the bid award. The project is expected to be completed by May 23, 2014.

A $3 million renovation of the former Anson Middle School will locate the Marshalltown school administration offices to the building in the picture at the right. At the left in the photo, the new entrance and elevator has been built on the site.

The advantage for the school district is the timing of this project. School construction contractors are usually busiest during the summer. Since this is a fall and winter project on a vacant building, it might work to the district's advantage.

"We'll probably get fairly good pricing because of that, we hope," said Dave Schulze, district architect.

The current administration offices are housed at 317 Columbus Drive. The building is no longer meeting the needs of the district and has been in the plans to be torn down. It is also not handicap accessible.

This is the third phase of this particular Support Services project. The first phase included the demolition of a portion of the old Anson Middle School building. The $1.7 million second phase included the building of an entrance, including an elevator, to prepare the site for the remodeling this fall.
