CRESTON - Spreading the wealth on the scoreboard and the glass, the Marshalltown Community College men's basketball team blitzed past Southwestern CC 78-39 in Iowa Community College Athletic Conference Region XI action Tuesday.
Merdic Green led a balanced Tiger attack with 14 points and Marlon Williams added 12 on 6-for-8 shooting to help MCC (7-5) claim its fourth win in its last five games.
The Tigers shot a season-best 54.2 percent with 11 different players figuring into the scoring column. MCC also allowed the fewest points of the year and limited the Warriors to 30 percent shooting from the floor.
The Tigers earned a 43-25 advantage on the boards and pulled down 11 offensive rebounds to help create a 50-18 gap for points in the paint. Tyrese Hoxter and Mike Rodriguez tallied nine points and four rebounds off the bench, while Marquis Cunningham had eight points. Seven different players grabbed at least four boards for MCC, led by Troidell Carter's six. The Tigers jumped out to a 32-15 lead at the half and had an overall scoring advantage of 49-8 in bench points.
John Johnson chipped in three points, three assists and three rebounds in his season debut after missing the first two months with a wrist injury. Raheim Holloway racked up four points, six assists and five rebounds as MCC earned its fourth straight win over Southwestern dating back to the 2010-11 season. Elliot Hamdeed paced Southwestern (6-6) with eight points.
After 11 consecutive road games, the Tigers return home with a Region XI showdown against Ellsworth Community College tonight at 7 p.m. The game is preceded by the women's contest starting at 5 p.m.
