R. Dale “Poody” Bratton, 93

TOLEDO-R. Dale "Poody" Bratton, 93, of Toledo, passed away Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at Sunny Hill Care Center in Tama. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, December 21, 2013 at 10:30 AM at Christ United Methodist Church Worship Center, 301 S. Broadway, in Toledo with Pastor Brian Oliver officiating. Interment will follow at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Tama. Visitation will be held on Friday, December 20, 2013 from 5-7 PM at Christ United Methodist Church Worship Center in Toledo.

R. Dale was born on August 24, 1920, near Toledo, Iowa, the son of Ralph and Jessie (Mason) Bratton.

He graduated from Toledo High School in 1939.

R. Dale served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater from May 12, 1943 and was discharged December 3, 1945. Returning from service, he went to work for Paul Yetter at Toledo Cleaners. He later purchased the cleaning shop and operated it with his wife until his retirement on September 1, 1981.

On November 3, 1949, he married Mary Svacina at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama. She passed away in 1999. On July 23, 2001, he marred Ila Jean Abbe.

Poody enjoyed woodworking and was a former member of the Lions Club, Wieting Theatre Trustees and Chamber of Commerce. He also enjoyed his coffee club at the Big T.

Survivors include his wife, Ila Jean of Toledo; his daughter, Ann (Michael) Dumbauld of Hobart, IN; three grandchildren, Matthew (Sarah) Dumbauld of Hobart, IN, Elizabeth (Scott) Neely of Hobart, IN and Paul Dumbauld of Peotone, IL; five great-grandchildren; seven stepchildren, Dr. Gary (Donna) Abbe of Taylors, SC, Joan (Rich) Wedmore of Piney Flats, TN, Sandra Leonard (Rich Daly) of Cedar Rapids, David Abbe of Broken Arrow, OK, Shelly (Chuck) Vileta of Iowa City, Beth (Barry) Kaiser of Easley, SC, and Lisa (Steven) Stark of State Center; nine step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and a niece, Sue Slay of California.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his first wife, Mary; a brother, Donald Bratton; and an infant sister.

A memorial fund has been established.
