Mrs. Major Neoma Garrington, of The Salvation Army, was "Promoted to Glory" on Dec. 15, 2013.
Neoma Mae Christian was born on June 7, 1924 in Muscatine, Iowa. She was raised by her paternal grandmother and her uncle Guy Lawson.
Neoma graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1942. In 1944, she graduated from The Salvation Army Seminary (CFOT). On August 21, 1947, she married Dwight Garrington of Marshalltown. She graduated from Westmar College in 1970.
During their 45 years together the Garringtons served as pastors in Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan and South Dakota. They also served as teachers in Bettendorf and at the Seminary in Chicago.
During retirement, Neoma used her gifts in education by helping men at The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC) fulfill their dreams by teaching them to read or prepare for a GED or college.
Neoma was preceded in death by her husband, Dwight, a son-in-law, Major Randall Sjogren, and a great-granddaughter, Abigail. She is survived by four children, Lt. Colonel Stephen (Linda) Garrington, Majors James (Judy) Garrington, Major Deborah Sjogren, Majors Jan (Russell) Sjogren; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in Norridge, IL on Dec. 30th at 10 a.m.
