Local man makes strangling device at halfway house

A man who fashioned a drawstring into a garrote at a local residential facility has been arrested.

Matthew E. Sanache, 34, was arrested Wednesday, at the halfway house, 1401 S. 17th Ave., after officers were shown the homemade weapon.

According to police, Sanache admitted to officers that he had the device in his possession and that he had made it.

Sanache is charged with possession of contraband at a residential facility, a Class C felony.

Thursday

Matthew Elias Sanache, of the Marshalltown Residential Facility, made an initial appearance on a possession of contraband charge. The public defender's office was appointed to handle his case. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on Feb. 3. Bond is set at $10,000 cash or surety.

Timothy Todd Weese, of Le Grand, made an initial appearance on a operating while intoxicated-third offense charge and a driving while revoked charge. The public defender's office was appointed to handle his case. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on Feb. 3. Bond is set at $5,000 cash or surety. The court ordered that Weese obtain a substance abuse evaluation and submit the results to the court within 60 days of release.

Shelby Peak, address unknown, made an initial appearance on two counts of a child endangerment charge and possession of drug paraphernalia charge. The public defender's office was appointed to handle her case. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on Feb. 3. Bond is set at $2,000 cash or surety. The court ordered that she obtain a substance abuse evaluation and submit the results to the court within 60 days of today's date.

Kirk Thomas, 515 N. Center St., made an initial appearance on a public intoxication charge. He pleaded guilty and was fined $65 with a $22.75 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $147.75, due within 30 days of today's date.

Karla Alejandra Alejos, 408 Sharon Ave., made an initial appearance on a theft-fifth degree charge. She pleaded guilty and was fined $100 with a $35 surcharge, a $125 law enforcement initiative surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $320 plus restitution if applicable. All payments are due within 30 days of today's date.

Letty Barrera Viramontes, 306 N. Center St., made an initial appearance on a theft-fifth degree charge. She pleaded guilty and was fined $100 with a $35 surcharge, $125 law enforcement initiative surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $320 plus restitution if applicable, due within 30 days of today's date.

Heath Moore, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a possession of marijuana charge. The public defender's office was appointed to handle his case. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on Feb. 12. Moore was released on his own recognizance. The court ordered he complete a substance abuse evaluation and submit the results to the court within 60 days of today's date.

Incidents

On Tuesday, Larry Dean Brittenham, of Garwin, reported the theft of a Mathews Drenalin hunting bow with a Wisker Biscuit rest, camera mount, five Easton Arrows-Lumenoks-white fletches and an adjustable quiver from 1700 Brookside St. Estimated value of loss was $1,200.

On Tuesday, Jake Walahoski, 304 Nicholas Drive, reported hit and run damage to the rear bumper and tail light on a 2013 Toyota Tacoma while at the intersection of Sixth Street and Olive Street. Estimated value of damage was $500.

Arrests

On Wednesday, Kirk Arnell Thomas, 515 N. Center St., was arrested for public intoxication.

On Tuesday, Nathan Wayne Cuellar, 6 S. Fifth Ave. Apt. #6, was arrested for theft-fifth degree from Kwik Star and theft-fifth degree from Walmart.

On Tuesday, Phillip Terrell Davis, 116 N. First St. Apt. #2, was arrested for criminal mischief to a vehicle.

On Tuesday, Josue Gaona Correa, 10 N. Fifth St., was arrested for driving while revoked.

Accidents

On Wednesday, a car driven by a 17-year-old female from Marshalltown was southbound on Highway 14 when, due to the icy road conditions, it collided with the rear of a pickup driven by Annette Marie Mayfield, 605 N. Second Ave., which was slowing because of stopped traffic. No injuries were reported. Damage to the 17-year-old's car was estimated at $400 while the Mayfield pickup received an estimated $2,500 in damage.

On Wednesday, a car driven by a 16-year-old male from Albion was westbound negotiating the curve on Player Street when it went out of control and collided with a pickup driven by Jeffrey Hale Barker, 301 S. Second Ave., which was traveling east of Player Street. Barker was possibly injured, but not treated. The 16-year-old male was cited for failure to maintain control and no insurance. Damage to the 16-year-old's car was estimated at $1,000 while the Barker pickup received an estimated $2,000 in damage.

On Tuesday, a car driven by Peter Paul Babinat, 1010 S. 11th Ave., was eastbound in the 10 block of East Anson Street in the left turn lane when it applied it's brakes on the icy road and collided with the rear of a vehicle driven by Paula Jeanne Rutherford, 2704 Yates Ave., which was slowing to turn into a private driveway. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Babinat car was estimated at $2,000 while the Rutherford vehicle received an estimated $1,000 in damage.

On Tuesday, a vehicle driven by Stephen Foster McCann, 1520 Summit St., was southbound in the 100 block of 16th Street when the driver became distracted by an animal in the road and struck a legally parked car. No injuries were reported. McCann was cited for failure to maintain control. Damage to the McCann vehicle was estimated at $4,000 while the legally parked car received an estimated totaling damages of $14,000.

On Tuesday, a car driven by a 17-year-old female from Marshalltown was southbound on South Sixth Street when it went out of control on the icy roadway and began sliding sideways while a vehicle driven by Angel Torrez, 414 Jerome St., which was following behind was unable to stop due to the ice and collided with the left front then the rear causing the juvenile's car to spin around and come to rest in the southbound lanes while the Torrez vehicle came to rest in the snowy ditch. No injuries were reported. Damage to both vehicles was estimated at $3,000 each.

On Tuesday, a car driven by Matthew Caleb Hill, of Iowa Falls, was westbound in the 100 block of East Church Street when a vehicle changed lanes in front of it causing the Hill vehicle to swerve to the left, go out of control on the roadway and strike a legally parked vehicle in a lot pushing it into a legally parked pickup in front of it. Hill was possibly injured, but not treated. Hill was cited for failure to maintain control and no insurance-accident. Damage to the Hill car and the legally parked vehicle was estimated at $2,000 each while the legally parked pickup received an estimated $100 in damage.

On Monday, a car driven by Soumya Ranjan Das, 2510 S. Sixth St. Apt. C33, was southbound on South Center Street turning onto Southridge Road when it sideswiped a car driven by a 17-year-old female from Marshalltown that was slowing for a stop at the intersection. No injuries were reported. Damage to both vehicles was estimated at $800 each.

On Dec. 9, 2013, a car driven by a 16-year-old female from Albion was westbound on Church Street when it struck a legally parked car. No injuries were reported. Damage to both vehicles was estimated at $2,000 each.

The Marshalltown Fire Department responded to a dispatched/cancelled en route to South 12th Avenue, a good intent call to 2602 S. Eighth St., a detector activation-no fire-unintentional at 3102 S. Sixth St., a smoke detector activation due to malfunction at 105 W. Boone St., and six medical assists with the EMS crew to: 1610 Fremont St., 1101 S. Sixth St., 206 Nicholas Drive, 101 W. Iowa Ave., 412 Player St., and 1509 Marion St.

Tuesday

The Marshalltown Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle accident with injuries on South Third Avenue, a passenger vehicle fire at 711 E. Boone St., two extrication of victims from vehicle on South Center Street and the 3200 block of Highway 30 and four medical assists with the EMS crew to: 2203 S. Third Ave., 202 Nicholas Drive, 202 N. Second Ave., and 6 Marion St.

Monday

The Marshalltown Fire Department responded to a dispatched/cancelled en route to 2802 S. Center St., a motor vehicle accident with injuries on South Sixth Street and a medical assist with the EMS crew to 101 NewCastle Road.
