COLO - The Colo-NESCO girls' basketball team broke free of the first-tournament-game jitters with a 7-0 run to end the first half and an 11-0 spurt to start the second, sending the fourth-ranked Royals on their way to a 68-39 rout of Southeast Webster-Grand in Class 1A Region 6 play here Tuesday night.
Shayla Dean tallied 19 points, 10 steals and five assists, while Caitlyn Riese had 18 points and Madison Farren finished with a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Royals (21-1).
Melanie Van Loon chipped in eight points and five assists for Colo-NESCO, which struggled to a 25-21 lead before scoring the final seven points of the first half.
The Royals put the finishing touches on Southeast Webster-Grand (8-15) to open the third quarter and used a 26-6 scoring advantage in the period to put the game away.
Hannah Buseman and Makaelyn Neuendorf both netted five points to aid the Royals in their 10th consecutive win.
Jossie Ferrari and Nicole Williams led the Eagles with 10 points apiece. Southeast Webster-Grand, which defeated Northeast Hamilton in last week's regional opener, had won three of its last four games.
Colo-NESCO advances to host Coon Rapids-Bayard (17-5) in Friday's Region 6 semifinal in Colo at 7 p.m. The Crusaders have won four straight, including Tuesday's 52-41 victory over Paton-Churdan and an opening-round triumph over Iowa Christian Academy.
Rockford 58, AGWSR 40
ROCKFORD - Alexa Johnson's game-high 20 points was not enough to lead AGWSR to victory as the Cougars fell to 11th-ranked Rockford in the second round of Class 1A Region 2 play.
The host Warriors (15-7) scored their seventh straight win behind a balanced attack, led by 15 points apiece from Madison Wood and Rachael Enabnit. Emma Staudt added 13 points and Emily Carroll had nine points and 11 rebounds.
Becca Wiarda contributed 12 points for AGWSR (12-10), which had defeated CAL in Thursday's opening round for a third straight win. Madi Fryslie chipped in four points and four assists, while Megan Marlette had a team-high nine rebounds in the season-ending defeat.
Rockford will face North Iowa (13-10) on Friday night at Northwood-Kensett.
Dike-New Hartford 51, Grundy Center 36
DIKE - Eight days after suffering a 41-point defeat, Grundy Center was within seven points of eighth-ranked Dike-New Hartford with 6 minutes to go in an eventual 51-36 loss to the Wolverines in Class 2A Region 2 quarterfinal action.
The Spartans lost 76-35 to D-NH last Monday but made the changes that gave them a chance the second time around. Grundy Center (12-11) led 15-11 after the first quarter but could not sustain the success the rest of the way.
Dike-New Hartford (19-2) netted its ninth straight win with Olivia Verhulst and Ashley Dumler leading the way with 15 points apiece.
Katie Lindeman paced Grundy Center with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Ally Jansen had 13 points in the season-ending defeat. Alyssa Mathews added four points, five boards and four assists.
Roland-Story 58, East Marshall 31
STORY CITY - East Marshall exploded to a 19-15 lead after the first quarter but fizzled from there, falling 58-31 to Roland-Story in its Class 3A Region 5 opener.
Taylor Fricke scored 14 of her team-leading 18 points in the first quarter for the Mustangs (6-16), who were outscored 43-12 after the opening stanza. Fricke also finished with a team-high nine rebounds.
Ashley Allen tallied seven points, Meriel Leavy had five points and seven rebounds, and Maci Fritz netted a single point in East Marshall's season-ending loss.
Natalie Vance led Roland-Story (11-11) with 20 points and five steals, while Brooke Staker netted 10 points. The Norse will visit 10th-ranked Hampton-Dumont (18-5) tonight in regional semifinal action.
