Hometown: Mankato, Minn.
Family: My wife Becky, and our son, Kristofer.
Pets: Puddles, the cat.
Hobbies and interests: I like exercise, sports, movies and people.
Occupation: I am a substitute high school teacher, a bus driver and odd job "completer."
What that means: I substitute teach at East Marshall High School in Le Grand, drive a bus for the Marshalltown YMCA-YWCA, and do small jobs around Marshalltown.
Tenure: Perviously, I worked seven years as a vocational rehabilitation counselor, and retired after 30 years as the director of therapeutic recreation at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.
Best part of job: I love working with both young, and elderly people.
Books: Lord of the Rings trilogy, by J.R.R. Tolkien. I enjoy any book involving a person or people who overcome adversity.
Movies: "Braveheart," directed by Mel Gibson, "The Last Samurai" directed by Edward Zwick, and "The Rookie" directed by John Lee Hancok. "The Rookie" is a special favorite, because the central character is a teacher who becomes a major league baseball pitcher.
Foods: "Fun" fruits, bananas, Cheetos and barbecued ribs.
Sports: The St. Louis Cardinals and the University of Northern Iowa Panthers.
Local involvement: I am a member of St. Henry Catholic Church of Marshalltown, the YMCA-YWCA and an avid supporter of the Y's Blue Wave Swim Team. I also actively support our veterans. I am also a member of the American Diabetes Association and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Best part of living here: It never takes long to get to where you want to go and there are lots of good and interesting people.
Most influential people: Becky. She cares about everyone and seldom loses her cool.
Advice: Every person is important - from the youngest to the oldest.
