Drake promotes Pohlman to associate hoops coach

DES MOINES – Allison (Starr) Pohlman has been promoted to associate head coach of the Drake women’s basketball team, head coach Jennie Baranczyk announced Monday.

Pohlman, a Wellsburg native, has been an assistant at Drake since 2007 and continued serving under Baranczyk when she was hired in 2012 to replace Amy Stephens.

“Allison exemplifies everything that we strive for in our program,” said Baranczyk. “She is an exceptional teacher and recruiter. Allison values hard work, loyalty and loves Drake. She is such an integral part to the success of our program and we are lucky to have her here.

“This is a well-deserved promotion.”

Pohlman was a standout member of the Northern Iowa women’s basketball team, earning Missouri Valley Conference all-Freshman team selection her first season. She was an all-MVC first team pick her final three seasons, the league’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2000 and the runner-up to Jackie Stiles for MVC Player of the Year.

Pohlman was inducted into the UNI Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011.
