Mustangs take two from BCLUW

GILMAN – The East Marshall baseball team swept BCLUW in a doubleheader of NICL West Division action here on Tuesday night.

Nick Long nabbed his seventh win of the season in the first game as he went five innings, allowing five hits with six strikeouts and one unearned run. BCLUW jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after the second inning but East Marshall fired back with six runs of their own in the bottom of the third to take control of the game.

Troy Dolphin took the loss for the Comets as he threw four innings, striking out two and walking four Mustang batters.

Adam Puumala followed up Long’s pitching performance with one of his own as he notched a shutout in just five innings as the Mustangs completed their sweep with a 10-0 shutout. The Comets were plagued by errors throughout as they totaled four in the contest.

Lane Walton helped the Mustangs jump out to an early lead with a two-run double in the first inning and they never looked back from there. BCLUW could not muster a run even with Brad Barkema’s two doubles as Calob Keller took the loss in his first start of the season.

East Marshall (19-7, 11-3) will be back in action tomorrow as they face off at South Tama. BCLUW (13-13, 8-10) concluded its regular season and will face off against AGWSR in the first round of Class 1A district play on July 12 at 5 p.m. in Reinbeck.

West Marshall sweeps aside Spartans

GRUNDY CENTER – The Grundy Center baseball team hosted West Marshall in an NICL West Division doubleheader on Tuesday night.

West Marshall was in total control throughout the first game, scoring 14 runs on 11 hits in just five innings. Cameron Bannister picked up his fifth win of the season as he shut out the Spartans, allowing four hits and striking out four in the 14-0 shutout. Jared Johnson led the way for the Trojans as he contributed three hits along with a two-run double.

Alex Dickey pitched a no-hitter in the second game of the twinbill as West Marshall picked up a second win of the evening, 12-0 in a full seven innings. The Trojans once again totaled 11 hits with two apiece from both Ross Randall and Johnson along with a triple by Dickey.

Austin Burroughs took the loss for the Spartans.

West Marshall (22-8, 11-2) will host North Polk tonight in a non-conference game. Grundy Center (7-15, 5-11) has today off and will play at South Hardin on Thursday in an NICL West matchup.

Hoeg helps Redhawks blank Royals

ZEARING – Cameron Hoeg was terrific for the North Tama baseball team in its 7-0 shutout win over Colo-NESCO in Tuesday’s Iowa Star Conference clash.

Hoeg pitched the complete game, allowing just four hits while striking out nine for his eighth win of the season.

The Redhawks scored two runs in the first and rode the momentum throughout the contest. Will Earley provided two hits and two RBIs and Joe Earley also contributed three RBIs of his own to lead the way for the Redhawks, who totaled seven hits in the win.

Brady Stoeffler suffered the loss for the Royals.

North Tama (21-7, 14-4) will play at Riverfront Stadium in Waterloo at 5:30 p.m. tonight against North Butler. Colo-NESCO (14-9, 11-6) will also be in action as the Royals host Colfax-Mingo in non-conference play.

Mustangs end three-game drought

GRUNDY CENTER – Bobbi Amendt hit her second home run of the summer and the East Marshall softball team snapped a three-game slide, closing the regular season with a 9-1 win over Grundy Center (5-17, 2-10) in NICL West Division softball here Tuesday.

Amendt was one of three Mustangs to tally two hits, going 2-for-5 with a double, a home run and two runs scored. Maria Rasmusson was 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI, and Ellen Hungerford finished 2-for-4. Amanda Paxton and Juliana Arifi both added doubles in support of Kodie Hoskey, who struck out seven over 5 1/3 innings for the pitching win. Hoskey allowed just three hits and three walks.

East Marshall (16-14, 8-4) opens Class 3A regional play at home tonight, hosting West Liberty (19-13) at 7 p.m.
