Defense delivers as AGWSR stays perfect

RICEVILLE – The AGWSR defense allowed only 88 yards of total offense and the 8-Man No. 4 Cougars improved to 3-0 by winning their District 2 opener against previously unbeaten Riceville, 35-14, here Saturday afternoon.

Liam Stubbe rushed 17 times for 133 yards and two touchdowns, caught a 38-yard touchdown pass, and quarterback Nathan Karsjens accounted for 124 yards of total offense as AGWSR (3-0, 1-0) overcame two turnovers and a 65-yard kickoff return for touchdown by Riceville’s Tommy Bauer.

The Cougar defense surrendered just 45 yards on the ground and another 43 through the air, as Riceville quarterback Matthew Green was 5-for-20 passing with an interception. Tate Hofmeister picked off a pass and Caleb Meinders recovered a fumble to help AGWSR prevail.

Tyler Rose led the Cougar defense with six solo tackles and nine assists, and Aaron Roelfs added five solo and six assisted stops.

Karsjens was just 2-for-10 for 54 yards with two interceptions, but he rushed 18 times for 70 yards and a score. Roelfs added a 4-yard touchdown plunge.

AGWSR hosts top-ranked Don Bosco this Friday at 7 p.m. in Ackley.

Sumner-Fredericksburg 42, BCLUW 6

CONRAD – BCLUW’s climb into Class 1A began with a District 2 loss at home to Sumner-Fredericksburg (1-2, 1-0) here Friday night.

The Comets (0-3, 0-1) all but abandoned the run game, as quarterback Brad Barkema completed 13-of-27 passes for 163 yards and a touchdown while rushing 12 times for 60 yards. He handed the ball off just six times.

Clay Silver caught six passes for 60 yards and a touchdown, and Coby Willett had four grabs for 62 yards in the loss.

Silver was the team’s top defender as well, racking up five solo and eight assisted tackles. Mason Dhyne and Bradley Bell totaled six tackles.

Charles City 28, South Tama 27, OT

CHARLES CITY – A failed conversion let down the South Tama County football team again as the Trojans fell 28-27 to Charles City in overtime in Friday’s Class 3A District 3 opener.

The host Comets (1-2, 1-0) rushed for 272 yards and four scores to pick up their first win, led by Dylan Koresh. The sophomore had 31 carries for 136 yards. Tyreque Baker ran for 94 yards and a score.

STC quarterback Clayton Rosenberger finished 12-for-14 passing for 160 yards and two touchdowns, connecting with Nick Ryan on a 59-yarder and with Isaac Judge for a 35-yard score. Ryan had two grabs for 78 yards.

Tanner Probasco rushed five times for 57 yards and a touchdown, and Judge added 51 yards on the ground.

Mario Moncada totaled 13 tackles and Kyle Kucera had 11 for the South Tama defense. Probasco picked off a pass and Rosenberger recovered a fumble as both teams committed two turnovers.
