The final postseason honors have come out for the 2017 softball season and two area athletes were selected as first-team all-state representatives in their respective classes by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association.

Seniors Kallie Malloy from West Marshall earned her first all-state honor of her career in Class 3A, while AGWSR’s sophomore Taryan Barrick was selected to the 1A first team.

Malloy was one of the top pitchers in 3A this season, leading the Trojans to a state tournament appearance with a 28-3 record on the mound. She recorded 260 strikeouts and had a .84 ERA, both good for the third-best marks in 3A.

Barrick led 1A with 258 strikeouts in 149 innings pitched, leading to a 21-6 record for the Cougars. She also was sixth in the class with a 1.03 ERA while allowing an opponent batting average of .136. Barrick was also effective at the plate, recording a .400 average and driving in 35 RBIs while hitting three homers.

Three area softballers were selected to the second team in their class, with West Marshall junior Brooke Snider earning a 3A spot, BCLUW senior Samantha Ubben earning a 2A selection, and AGWSR eighth-grader Makenna Kuper earning a 1A nod.

This was the second-straight selection for Snider, as she earned a second-team laurel in 2016. She hit 10 homers this season, good enough to tie for fifth in 3A, and had a .459 batting average.

Ubben was one of the premier pitchers in 2A, earning a 19-5 record and striking out 199 on the year while recording a .98 ERA. Ubben also split the North Iowa Cedar League West Division Most Valuable Player award with Malloy.

Kuper earns a second-team accolade in her first year playing at the high school level, recording a .466 average with 42 RBIs and 18 extra-base hits.

There were also three third-team selections in the area, with freshman Kodie Hoskey representing East Marshall on the 3A squad, senior Jordyn Beeghly from BCLUW earning a 2A nod, junior Tessa Dvorak from North Tama being selected to the 1A team. Beeglhy earned her second-straight all-state accolade, as she was a second-team honoree last year.

Four girls earned honorable mentions as well, with seniors Leah Yantis and Jenna Willett from BCLUW earning the honors in 2A and senior Alana Groninga from AGWSR and junior Carissa Calderwood from North Tama selected to the 1A honorable mentions. Groninga has earned an all-state honor each of the last three years, adding this year’s honorable mention to third-team selections in 2016 and 2015.

Three selected to academic all-state

Also announced was the 2017 academic all-state squad, and three area girls were honored for their achievements on and off the diamond.

AGWSR senior Anna Jaspers and South Tama seniors Sabrina Holtz and Shae Slaven were selected to the all-academic squad, a team that features only 47 girls from all five classes around the state.
