MCC netters streak to 7 before suffering 1st loss

NORFOLK, Neb. — The streak is over.

The Marshalltown Community College volleyball team extended its win streak to seven on Friday before seeing it stopped in the second match of the Northeast Tournament on Friday.

The Tigers (7-1) defeated Southeast CC in straight sets, 25-18, 25-23, 25-20, to open their tournament, but NJCAA Division II No. 9 Central (Neb.) CC ended Marshalltown’s run with a sweep of the Tigers, 25-20, 25-18, 25-21.

“We played solid volleyball for about 90 percent of the day,” said MCC head coach Justin Hoskins. “The 10 percent where we continue to make mistakes is costing us in key moments right now.

“The good news is that we’re back on the court [Saturday] and we’ll have another chance to get better.”

Marshalltown CC is back in action today at Northeast with matches against No. 7 Kirkwood and tournament host Northeast, which is ranked 15th.

“I think this weekend will show our girls that in order to compete with the top teams that we play, we have to put together full matches and get rid of the 10 percent that’s holding us back.”
