Lanning, Kempt earn Big 12 weekly honors

AMES — The Big 12 Conference announced that Iowa State senior linebacker Joel Lanning and quarterback Kyle Kempt were named the Big 12 Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week respectively.

Lanning was pivotal in the Cyclone’s 38-31 upset win over then-No. 3 Oklahoma in Norman on Saturday, playing on both sides of the ball and totaling 78 snaps. Lanning had eight tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery in the victory over the Sooners.

Lanning currently ranks sixth nationally in tackles per game (10.8), recording teh most tackles in a game by a Big 12 player this season with 20 in a loss against Texas two weeks ago.

Kempt was also important in the win, making his first start for the Cyclone offense. He completed 18 of 24 passes for 343 yards and three touchdowns against OU. He led four Iowa State touchdown drives that were 70 yards or more, including a 94-yard march.

With his 300-plus yard passing performance, Kempt and Jacob Park become the only two quarterbacks in Iowa State history to throw for 300 yards or more in a game in the same season.
