Fast start fuels Iowa in rout of Wisconsin

IOWA CITY — The start of a busy week for the Iowa women’s basketball team saw the Hawkeyes get the win they wanted and the rest they needed.

Five players scored in double figures and the University of Iowa whipped Wisconsin 88-61 in Sunday’s Big Ten Conference clash at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Megan Gustafson scored a game-high 25 points to help the Hawkeyes (21-6, 9-5) claim their fifth-straight win with two more games on this week’s schedule to close out the regular season. Iowa visits Rutgers on Wednesday and hosts Indiana on Saturday morning before heading to Indianapolis for the conference tournament.

A 23-13 lead after the first quarter and a 45-23 advantage at the intermission meant a lot for a team hoping to save some energy for the stretch run.

“We came out well, we had great energy coming out this game,” said Hawkeye head coach Lisa Bluder. “We started with high energy on both offense and defense and were pushing the ball well.

“It’s a compressed week for us — three games in seven days — so for us to have the ability to rest some of those players was nice.”

None of Iowa’s starters played in the final eight minutes after it took a 71-38 lead into the fourth quarter.

Alexis Sevillian made a career-high five 3-pointers and added 19 points for the Hawkeyes, while Kathleen Doyle and Hannah Stewart scored 10 points apiece. Makenzie Meyer chipped in nine points and a team-high six assists, as Iowa handed out 24 assists on 33 field goals.

Cayla McMorris led Wisconsin (9-19, 2-13) with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
