Iowa hammers Wildcats; Jackrabbits handle ISU

IOWA CITY — The seventh-ranked Iowa wrestling team won all but one match in rolling No. 17 Northwestern 33-2 on Sunday inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Hawkeyes (11-2, 6-2 Big Ten) got four bonus-point victories, including technical falls for Michael Kemerer at 157 pounds and Alex Marinelli at 165. Vince Turk (141) and Mitch Bowman (184) added major decisions.

Spencer Lee (125) and Brandon Sorensen (149) both beat top-10 opponents, making it five-straight such victories for the freshman Lee.

Paul Glynn (133) got his first win over a ranked opponent, scoring a 3-2 decision against No. 20 Colin Valdiviez.

Kemerer’s win was his 22nd in a row, while Sorensen closed his career with a 35-3 record at home.

Iowa returns to the mat Saturday, visiting top-ranked Penn State for a 7 p.m. dual that will be televised by the Big Ten Network.

BROOKINGS, S.D. — The Iowa State wrestling team got bonus points from all of its match victories, but 12th-ranked South Dakota State won 7-of-10 bouts for a 30-15 triumph over the Cyclones on Sunday in Big 12 Conference action.

The host Jackrabbits (11-2, 6-0) won seven of the first eight contests to put the outcome out of reach, starting with a pin at 125 pounds. Iowa State (7-8, 5-5) forfeited at 141 before Jarrett Degen gave the Cyclones their first win of the match — a technical fall — at 149.

The Cyclones closed the dual with Sam Colbray’s pin of No. 11 Nate Rotert at 197 and Marcus Harrington’s major decision of Alex Macki at 285.

Iowa State continues Big 12 action with Friday’s home dual against Fresno State before visiting No. 13 Northern Iowa on Saturday night.
