Iowa’s Gustafson sets B1G record

IOWA CITY — University of Iowa junior forward Megan Gustafson broke a Big Ten Conference record with her seventh women’s basketball Player of the Week award, the league office announced Monday.

Gustafson broke the previous single-season record of six, held by Ohio State’s Jantel Lavender during the 2010-11 campaign.

Gustafson has been recognized by the conference in 12 of the first 13 weeks of the season, winning seven Player of the Week honors while being on the award’s Honor Roll five times.

The left-handed post player averaged 30.5 points, 16 rebounds and 2.5 blocked shots in a pair of Big Ten wins for the Hawkeyes last week. She scored 36 points on 14-of-19 shooting to go with 17 rebounds in Iowa’s overtime win at Michigan State on Thursday night, and added 25 points and 15 boards in Sunday’s victory against Minnesota.

Those marked the 48th and 49th double-doubles of Gustafson’s career, breaking an Iowa basketball record for men or women. Kevin Kunnert (1971-73) held the previous record of 48.

Gustafson was also named on Monday to the Wooden Award Late Season Top 20, and was selected as the Madness Big Ten Women’s Basketball Player of the Week by College Sports Madness.
