MCC basketball splits at Northeast

NORFOLK, Neb. — The Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team took the hardwood Friday night to face off with ICCAC opponent Northeast Community College in the regular-season finale.

The Tigers entered looking to secure their third conference victory while the Hawks wanted their first win in ICCAC play, and it was Marshalltown who came out the 73-66 victor.

Mohamed Thiam finished with 30 points while going 12-for-22 form the floor and 5-for-10 from 3-point land to lead MCC. Thiam also got his 14th double-double with 14 rebounds. Oscar Kao finished with 10 points as well while the Tigers shot 49 percent as a team.

Northeast and MCC will be back at it on Monday when the two teams face off in the first round of the Region XI tournament at the Student Activity Center in Marshalltown, starting at 7 p.m.

WOMEN

Northeast 65, MCC 57

NORFOLK, Neb. — The Marshalltown Community College women’s basketball team lost its final regular-season contest of the year by dropping a game to ICCAC foe Northeast Community College, 65-57.

Loralei Siliga had a game-high 22 points to pace the Tigers while Claudia Morente chipped in 20 of her own, including a 5-for-8 line from behind the 3-point line. Alyssa Roth also finished her regular season strong with 12 points.

The Hawks also had three scorers in double figures, with Sierra Bell dropping in 19, followed by Mykala Baylor with 13 and Irene Sanz with 11.

MCC takes the court again on Wednesday when the Tigers play in the first round of the NJCAA Region XI tournament, where they take on the Hawks again in Norfolk, Neb., for a chance to move on in the tournament.
