SPORTS SHORTS: Cadets end West Marshall win streak

STATE CENTER — The West Marshall boys basketball team dropped a non-conference game to Iowa Falls-Alden on Thursday night, 72-67.

The Trojans (13-5) started off the first quarter by falling down 25-14, but they battled back to only be down one by halftime. They still only trailed by two going into the fourth quarter, but the Cadets (7-9) were able to close out the fourth quarter strong and snapped West Marshall’s seven-game winning streak.

Peyton Pope finished with a game-high 33 points for West Marshall, while Beau Coberley had 14 and Joseph Halverson turned in a double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds.

IF-A was led by Logan Aldinger with 24 points, followed by Karson Sharar with 22 and Devin Sheridan with 10.

MCC hosting fundraiser for coach’s son

The Marshalltown Community College basketball teams are hosting a fundraiser event for Pablo Martinez, son of Tigers head soccer coach Rafael Martinez, on Feb. 10.

Pablo was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in September of 2017, and he has been receiving treatment at Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines since his diagnosis. Rafael has been involved with the MCC men’s soccer program for over 10 years, and he has been head coach for the last seven.

Donations to support Pablo and his family will be accepted during the women’s game against Black Hawk Community College and the men’s conference matchup against NJCAA No. 2 Indian Hills. Tickets are $10 at the door, with half of those proceeds going to the Martinez family, and there will be a 50/50 raffle for attendees with half of the pot also going to the Martinez family.

Games will start at 5 p.m.
