SPORTS SHORTS: Hames helps Cougars top Huskies

ROCKFORD — The AGWSR boys basketball team won in the Class 1A District 4 quarterfinals over Nashua-Plainfield on Thursday, 58-50.

Alex Hames led the Cougars (9-13) with 27 points, with 15 of those coming off of five made 3-pointers. Luke Starr also had 16 for AGWSR, while Alec Stahl finished with nine.

Up next for the Cougars is a showdown with No. 6 Don Bosco in Clarksville on Tuesday, starting at 8 p.m.

Bolts hold off Colo-NESCO in districts

MADRID — The Colo-NESCO boys’ basketball season drew to a close on Thursday night with a loss to Baxter in the Class 1A District 2 quarterfinals, 60-53.

This was the rubber match of the series between the Royals (12-9) and Bolts (12-10), as they had split the season series in Iowa Star Conference South Division play.

Matthew Hill led Colo-NESCO with 16 points in his final game in a Royals uniform, while Sean Cutler hit five 3-pointers to score 15 points and Philip Bower followed with 14 points.

Will Clapper was the leading scorer for Baxter with 12 points, while Travis Lindemoen, Cole Damman and Bryce Bacon all finished with 11.
