Gradwell set for all-star weekends

Leedom picked for IBCA Series

West Marshall senior Isabelle Gradwell isn’t done with her high school basketball career just yet, as she has been selected to compete in a pair of all-star games by coaches around the state.

Gradwell will be featured in the Iowa Girls Coaches Association Larry Niemeyer Senior Game on April 8 where she will play on the 3A/4A/4A Select White team, and she will be playing on the Northeast Iowa Girls squad for the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association Senior All-Star series starting on March 24.

Gradwell will be playing with and against players like Ashley Joens from Iowa City High, who was recently named the 2018 Miss Iowa Basketball, and other all-state selections like Tatum Koenig from West Branch, Chloe Rice from Marion and Ashley Tull from North Linn.

In the IBCA Senior Series, teams will play two games along with a 3-point contest. Gradwell led Class 3A in 3-pointers made this season with 89, a mark that led all of Class 3A and just one reason she was named co-outstanding player for the NICL West Division.

Joining Gradwell in the IBCA Senior Series on the boys side is Zaine Leedom, who will represent East Marshall on the Northeast Iowa Boys team. The second-team all-state Mustang will be joined by players such as AJ Green from 4A state champion Cedar Falls as well as Ryan Miller from 2A runner-up North Linn and 2018 Mr. Iowa Basketball Joe Wieskamp from Muscatine.

Leedom finished the year leading East Marshall in both scoring and rebounding at 15.9 points per game and 6.8 boards per game.

AGWSR senior Mandy Willems has also been named to the 1A select team for the IGCA. Willems, a second-team all-state player and co-outstanding player for the NICL West, finished third in 3A in 3-pointers made with 81 while shooting 47.1 percent from deep. She will play along with Jenna Boetler from Bishop Garrigan, who led 1A in 3-pointers, as well as Mikayla Nachazel and Rylee Menster from defending three-time state champion Springville.

Also playing on the IGCA teams will be Molly Barten from Colo-NESCO, who will be on the 1A White Team, and McKensie Vaske from GMG, playing on the 1A Grey Team. Barten averaged 11.6 points and 8 rebounds per game during her senior campaign, finishing fourth in scoring and second in rebounding in the Iowa Star, while Vaske finished second in the Iowa Star in scoring at 16.2 points per game.
