Hill, Bear named Iowa Star Elite

Local seniors on league’s top squad

The Iowa Star All-Conference teams have been announced and Colo-NESCO senior Matthew Hill and Meskwaki senior Jarius Bear have been named to the Iowa Star elite team.

Hill, making his second-straight appearance on the elite team, averaged 21.7 points during South Division play while leading the Royals to a 9-1 division record and retaking the division title after having a streak of three-straight South Division championships snapped by Don Bosco in 2017.

Hill scored 217 points in 10 South Division games while shooting 57.1 percent from the floor and 74 percent from the free-throw line. He also had 74 rebounds and 13 blocks against division opponents. He scored the most points out of anyone in a South Division game when he went for 33 points against North Tama in just the second game of the season.

Bear finished second in the South Division in total scoring with 19.4 points per game while leading the Warriors to a 13-9 record and a trip to the district finals, where they lost a close one to Gladbrook-Reinbeck. Bear also had 48 total steals and 59 total assists this season, along with 107 rebounds. Bear had the best scoring game of the season for any Iowa Star player this year when he dropped 40 points on Don Bosco in a 67-58 loss to the Dons.

Bear and Hill were both first-team all-conference for the South Division, the with Hill as the only unanimous selection. This is the second-straight unanimous first-team selection for Hill and the first first-team honor for Bear, who earned second-team nods his sophomore and junior years.

Hill’s teammate Philip Bower was also first-team all-conference selection as the Royals senior led all South Division players with 69 assists in district games. Bower, who was a second-team selection last season, also averaged 12.4 points in 10 South Division games.

Rounding out the area first-team nods was GMG junior Brayden Peterson, making his first appearance on the all-conference teams. Peterson averaged 17.9 points per gmae this season during Iowa Star South play while shooting 53.3 percent from the floor and 47.4 percent from behind the 3-point line. He filled up the stat sheet during divisional play too with 32 assists, 13 steals and 12 blocks.

Meskwaki junior Taté Bear earned his third-straight all-conference honor by being selected to the second team, adding to an honorable mention during his freshman campaign and a first-team selection last season. Joining Taté on the second team were Colo-NESCO senior Jacob Clatt, North Tama senior Nic Sierra and GMG junior Aaron Fleming, all earning their first all-conference honors.

Sean Cutler is the third Royal player on the all-conference list, as the Colo-NESCO senior earned his second-straight honorable mention. Also receiving honorable mentions were Hunter Smoldt for GMG, Emmett Roberts for Meskwaki and Hale Hulme for North Tama.
