Shields, Tyon represent STC on all-conference first team

South Tama County seniors Sterling Tyon and Gabe Shields were both selected to the WaMaC Conference West Division all-conference first team after the Trojans won the division for the first time since joining the conference in 2014.

Shields was a defensive force during WaMaC West play, leading the conference in steals with 42, 11 more than Darius Moore from Clear Creek-Amana in second. Shields also finished sixth in scoring during conference play at 14.8 points per game while shooting 54.1 percent from the floor and 40 percent from three. He was also 10th in rebounding at 5.2 boards per game.

Tyon was a sharpshooter all season for STC and that showed during conference play as he finished third in the WaMaC West in total 3-pointers with 35 hits from deep at a 38.9 percent clip. He was just one make behind Spencer Tuoro from Benton Community and Lucas Schlesselman from Williamsburg, who both lead the division with 36 makes. Tyon is ninth in the division in scoring at 14.1 points per game this season and he led the Trojans in assists during division play with 32.

Joining Shields and Tyon on the all-conference teams was Keith Keahna, who earned a second-team selection. Also earning honorable-mention honors were Kaiden Buffalo and Justus Ward.
