Iowa’s Jewell, UNI’s Fountain drafted on Day 3

The 2018 NFL Draft wrapped up with rounds 4-7 on Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and a few more former Iowa college players heard their names called.

Josey Jewell from the University of Iowa was the first name off the board, as the Denver Broncos spent the 106th pick to take the Hawkeye All-American in the fourth round.

Jewell was the third Iowa player drafted, after corner Josh Jackson and center James Daniels both went in the second round on Friday.

Northern Iowa had its first and only player come off the board in the fifth round when the Indianapolis Colts took Panthers receiver Daurice Fountain with the 159th pick.

After becoming the 19th UNI player to ever be drafted, Fountain took to twitter to express his feelings about hearing his name called.

“@Colts y’all just got the steal of the draft! Thank God for opportunity!!” Fountain tweeted.

Those two were the last players taken from the state, but once the draft concluded a whirlwind of activity surrounded the Iowa schools.

Iowa State saw no players taken off the board during the draft propper, but five Cyclones were signed to teams as undrafted free agents.

Allen Lazard, who was considered the team’s best chance at having someone drafted, signed with the AFC South Champion Jacksonville Jaguars, while the trio of Joel Lanning, Jake Campos and Marchie Murdock all were picked up by the Dallas Cowboys. Colin Downing will have the shortest trip to his new home, as the Cyclone punter was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Hawkeyes had four more players signed as undrafted free agents. Receiver Matt Vandeberg was signed by the New York Jets as a weapon for third-overall pick Sam Darnold, offensive lineman Ike Boettger was given a contract by the Buffalo Bills, running back Akrum Wadley signed on with the Tennessee Titans and backfield mate James Butler has tryouts with both the Jets and Washington Redskins.

Two more players for UNI were given opportunities as well, with defensive back Malcolm Washington going to the Arizona Cardinals and fellow DB Elijah Campbell signing with the Cleveland Browns.
