Iowa’s Lee named Frosh of the Year

IOWA CITY — University of Iowa freshman wrestler Spencer Lee has been named the 2018 InterMat Freshman of the Year, the amateur wrestling website announced earlier this week.

This award has been presented each year since 2006 to the best college freshman wrestler in all divisions for their wrestling performance during the 2017-18 season. It is based exclusively on the balloting of writers and executives at InterMat.

Lee was listed at the top of seven ballots out of 10 submitted by the InterMat staffers for a total of 84 votes. Hawkeye redshirt freshman Alex Marinelli was seventh in voting.

Lee won the 125-pound title at the 2018 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Cleveland on March 17. He rolled through the championship bracket, scoring 27 team points via two technical falls, two pins and a 5-1 decision in the finals against previously undefeated Nick Suriano of Rutgers.

Lee joined the Iowa lineup on Jan. 5 and finished his freshman season with a 22-2 overall record. He led the Hawkeyes with eight technical falls, ranked third with nine pins and was named Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Year.
